Ke$ha, Black Eyed Peas, More Featured In O Music Awards Roundtable Debate

Music-video director Wayne Isham will join Most Innovative Video debate, which streams live Monday on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com.

Ever since they were first announced, the O Music Awards have proudly proclaimed themselves the untraditional alternative to the staid world of red carpets, acceptance speeches and celebrity glad-handing.

And for further proof of that point, consider the following: Though the inaugural O Music Awards won't premiere until April 28, the first award will be handed out on Monday at 4 p.m. ET ... and it's a big one.

For weeks, fans have been voting for the Most Innovative Music Video through the O Music Awards official site, and on Monday — in a roundtable debate moderated by MTV News' James Montgomery — a winner will be crowned.

The O Music Awards Debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by FUZE®, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com. Joining Montgomery around the table will be acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable's Brenna Ehrlich and some super-secret celebrity guests.

The Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and more will also take part in the discussion about just what makes a video truly innovative, and the folks who are nominated for the award — a list that includes Arcade Fire, Robyn, OK Go and Andy Grammer — will also Skype in to make the case for why their video deserves to be named Most Innovative.

On Monday morning, the original list of 10 nominees will be whittled down to the top five vote-getters, and then, during the debate, our roundtable and the Internet audience will cut that list down to the final three. At the very end, we'll announce the winner of the very first O Music Award for Most Innovative Video.

The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com. Tune in to see who will reign supreme in categories like Most Viral Dance, Funniest Music Short and NSFW Music Video!

¿Y a ti? ¿Qué te parece todo esto?

Coldplay, Rihanna, Evanescence Lead Fall Albums

Joe Jonas, Kelly Clarkson and Nickelback also on tap for new albums.
By Gil Kaufman

Rihanna
Photo: Tabatha Fireman/ WireImage

There's a very good reason why so many big albums come out in the last quarter of the year: In the run-up to the holidays, lots of kids, moms, dads and grandparents truck down to the local megamart looking for good stocking stuffers.

And this year's bumper crop cuts across all genres and classifications, including fall albums from Coldplay, Kelly Clarkson, Evanescence, Feist, Wilco, Drake, Nickelback, Rihanna, J. Cole, Mastodon, Joe Jonas, Mary J. Blige, Rick Ross, Nas, Florence and the Machine, and "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery.

Here's a breakdown by genre of the ones to watch for (with release dates subject to change):

Pop
We've been hearing about Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (October 24) for more than a year now. The original "American Idol" winner brings the drama in and out of the studio, as each of her recent albums seems to come wrapped in some fresh controversy. Determined to get her vision out, Clarkson survived a series of leaks earlier this year and made a solid chart debut with her tell-off first single, "Mr. Know It All." With a bit of urban bounce, some country, pop and a dash of soul, Clarkson's fifth LP promises to be one of the season's highlights.

Rihanna has been releasing albums at a torrid pace, with one every year since 2005 except for 2008. Her follow-up to 2010's Loud is reportedly due later this year, and a new Calvin Harris-produced single, "We Found Love," is due to hit radio on October 11.

All-grown-up Joe Jonas will drop his solo debut, the dance-inflected Fast Life, on October 11, "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger is expected to finally release her long-delayed solo album Killer Love on November 15, and new albums are also due from soul man Mayer Hawthorne (How Do You Do, October 11) and adorable indie duo She & Him (the holiday-themed A Very She & Him Christmas, October 25).

Black Eyed Peas leader will.i.am is also reportedly prepping a solo effort for November, and this year's "Idol" winner, country teen Scotty McCreery, will unleash his debut, Clear as Day (October 4), as will runner-up Lauren Alaina. In addition, former Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump will drop his solo debut, Soul Punk (October 18), and the end of the year may also see the release of the frequently pushed-back first album from ex-FOB bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz's new dance act, Black Cards.

Hip-Hop
The next few months will see big albums from the Bawse and the Apprentice, as Rick Ross returns with God Forgives, I Don't in November, his fifth album and follow-up to hit Teflon Don. Before that, Drake will fire it up for the second time with Take Care (October 24), which features guest spots from Ross, Weezy and the Weeknd and songs including the drunk-dial tale "Marvin's Room" and "Headlines."

Young Jeezy's long-gestating Thug Motivation 103 is due in October, reportedly complete with more positive messages on tunes like "Shake Life" and "Never Be the Same." Also look for new music from Common, Wale, Nas and Yelawolf.

R&B
Seventeen years after the breakthrough original, Mary J. Blige will offer My Life II (November 21), with production by Kanye West and Swizz Beatz and a cameo verse from her rap alter ego, Brooklyn, on the tune "Midnight Drive."

Also, R&B vet Monica plans a comeback with New Life and English singer Taio Cruz is planning to be back in November with an as-yet-untitled second collection of sure-to-be smashes produced by the likes of Dr. Luke, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia. Look for new music from Jason Derülo and hook mistress Dev as well.

Rock and More
Former pop-punk icons Blink-182 have already kicked off the season for guitar slingers with their reunion disc, Neighborhoods, but that's just the appetizer to Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto, which, in addition to a cryptic title, will feature a cameo from Rihanna.

Evanescence will storm back with a self-titled album of gothic rockers, their first in five years, including the first single "What You Want." One of the most unusual discs on tap is an album-length collaboration between punk icon Lou Reed and Metallica entitled Lulu (November 1), which is sure to crunch way more bones than Canadian singer Feist's more sedate Metals.

Flame-haired Florence Welch has promised that the second album from her band, Florence + the Machine, will be tougher and feature more heavy guitars and beats, which is guaranteed on the new one from Nickelback, Here and Now (November 11).

If that's not enough for you, country superstar Miranda Lambert is setting up her fourth album, Four the Record (November 1), Icelandic conundrum Björk will drop Biophilia (October 11) and French house duo Justice will spin out Audio, Video, Disco (October 25).

What fall albums are you most excited about? Let us know in comments below!

Lil Wayne Channels Jimi Hendrix For New Vibe Cover

'Music isn't about competition no more. All the gangster rappers are happy,' Wayne tells magazine.
By Rob Markman

Photo: VIBE

Lil Wayne is himself a music icon, but on the cover of Vibe magazine's October/November issue, the YMCMB superstar channels the spirit of another. Sporting a regal red and gold-accented coat, similar to one that Jimi Hendrix famously wore, Weezy capped off his outfit with a black fedora and black sunglasses, finding inspiration in the legendary guitarist. In his interview, Wayne opened up about competition in rap, his feud with Jay-Z and Drake's success, and of course, MTV News got the exclusive scoop.

"There's no competition [with any artists]. Music isn't about competition no more. All the gangster rappers are happy, all the skateboard rappers are happy, all the white rappers are happy. ... Everybody just happy to do music these days," Weezy said in an exclusive magazine excerpt obtained by MTV News. "There are no problems. That sh-- died a long time ago with them old-ass rappers. We are just making music, making money and having fun — feeding our families. Competition is for the old guys."

The quote is a bit contradictory considering Wayne threw a shot at Jay-Z on "I'm Good," a song off of his latest album, Tha Carter IV. The two have quietly been feuding for some time now, throwing subliminal darts in each other's direction, never actually acknowledging each other by name. When asked if he expected any backlash from the dis, Wayne stood confident.

"Well, I'm a man. I believe as a man, you should know that. Every man should know the repercussions and consequences behind whatever they do before they do it. And of course, I know there won't be any repercussions behind what I did," the rapper told Vibe.

Hip-hop beefs are a very small part of Wayne's dynamic. Vibe editor in chief Jermaine Hall said that the Young Money boss is more than just a rapper, citing his 2010 rock-inspired Rebirth album and his acoustic hit "How to Love" as examples of Tunechi's reach. It was his diversity and modern-day rock swag that led the magazine to use Hendrix as a muse.

"He was very into the Jimi Hendrix concept," Hall said of the shoot, which took place in Miami in early August. "I didn't know how far Wayne was willing to take it. But it just so happens that Jimi is also one of his idols and actually one of the people that influenced him to pick up a guitar and try to learn how to play. So he was 100 percent onboard with the concept."

In the issue, which also features Chris Rock, J. Cole and a story on Tupac's Hollywood impact, Vibe also got Weezy to open up about Drake's success. Is his competitive spirit fueled by Drizzy's accomplishments? Not in the least bit. "I don't look at it like that. Drake is my artist. If he wasn't my artist, then yeah, maybe," he said of their relationship. "But that's my artist. He's not [just] a friend. We're more than friends. It's business. It would be impossible for it to be a competition. I mean, I'm the guy's boss."

Weezy also gets political talking about his feelings on the riots that rocked London this past August. "All you could do is pray for the people that were dealing with the situation and hope for the best. As far as them blaming hip-hop, you can blame Jesus for things, so you can't really fault anybody for blaming someone or something. All you can do is hope for the best," he said in response to those who blamed rap for the political upheaval.

"Wayne is the type of artist ... obviously he's a rock star, he's loved in the 'hood, he's touching so many pockets around this country right now," Hall said of his latest cover subject. "It's what allows him to come out first week and do [almost a million]. He's not just dealing with one audience anymore."

Beyonce's Boyz II Men Sample On 'Countdown' Is 'Clever' Band Says

'I guess you can say we finally got our duet with Beyoncé,' Wanya Morris tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

When Beyoncé dropped 4 earlier this year, she paid homage to her roots by sampling Boyz II Men. The singer used the countdown portion of their track "Uhh Ahh" on her I'm-so-in-love party track "Countdown."

The song is all about the rapture of true love, with Beyoncé happily declaring her devotion to that special man in her life. So were the guys happy about her decision to include them on the album? "I thought it was very clever," Wanya Morris told MTV News earlier this week when he stopped by to chat about the latest Boyz II Men album, Twenty. "She's a clever artist. She's one of the best in the business right now. I guess you can say we finally got our duet with Beyoncé."

The guys are certainly having a moment this year, thanks to the sample and their work with Justin Bieber. They say that Beyoncé's decision to use their song on the lively track was pretty surprising, even though they have a bit of history with Queen B.

"It wasn't something we expected, but we do have a bit of a relationship," Nathan Morris explained. "A lot of people don't really know that when they had Destiny's Child, the first time they went on tour they opened up for us for quite a long time. And we tried our best to look after them and make sure everything was good. And back then they were incredible."

Even that long ago they knew Beyoncé stood out from the pack. "We all saw that she would wind up doing her thing," Morris added. "There is a connection, and at the end of the day we didn't know she would use that record. Game respects game, I guess you would call it."

Michael Jackson's Legacy, Two Years Later, By the Numbers

Legendary singer's impact continues to blossom in the two years since his death; MTV News breaks down the figures.
By Gil Kaufman

Michael Jackson
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Like Elvis, Bob Marley, Notorious B.I.G. and Frank Sinatra before him, Michael Jackson's influence has continued, and grown, since his untimely death on June 25, 2009.

On the second anniversary of the King of Pop's passing, MTV News took a look at the enduring appeal of MJ's music, videos and imagery, which continue to fascinate and attract fans across the globe thanks to a series of posthumous albums, a movie, video games and two upcoming Cirque du Soleil live shows.

Where Were You Two Years Ago When You Heard the News? Tell Us on Facebook

$72 million: According to Box Office Mojo, Jackson's posthumous concert film, "This Is It," has grossed more than $72 million to date domestically and $189 million in foreign markets for a worldwide take over more than $261 million. It ranks as the #2 music documentary of all-time behind Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never." The film has also generated nearly $45 million in DVD sales in the U.S.

16: In May, Jackson lodged his first #1 on the Billboard magazine Dance/ Club Play Songs chart in 16 years with the latest single from his posthumous Michael album, "Hollywood Tonight."

2: Number of posthumous albums that have been released since Michael's death in June 2009. Last year's Michael has sold just over 510,000 copies to date, while the This Is It collection has moved nearly 1 million copies to date in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

15,000: The number of videos submitted by fans since March for the crowdsourced video for "Behind the Mask." After they were edited down by a five-person team over two months, the resulting clip used submissions from more than 1,600 participants from 103 countries.

3 million: The amount of copies sold of the Ubisoft "Michael Jackson: The Experience" video game worldwide.

$57 million: The reported cost of Cirque du Soleil's traveling MJ show, "The Immortal World Tour, which is slated to kick off on October 2.

$1 billion: That gaudy figure is the reported amount the Jackson estate had generated by last June on the first anniversary of the singer's death. According to Billboard, the revenue was generated by a combination of music sales ($429 million), film/TV revenue ($392 million), music publishing ($130 million), licensing ($35 million) and a $31 million recording contract. (A spokesperson for Jackson's estate declined to provide updated figures for this story.)

$310 million: The amount of gross earnings reported by the executors of the estate in a December 2010 court filing detailing the progress made in paying off the $400 million in debt run up by the spendthrift singer during his lifetime.

16.1 million: MJ was always a big singles artist. Yes, Thriller is one of the best-selling albums of all time, but even in death, fans can't resist cherry-picking some of Michael's best songs. That explains why he's sold more than 16 million digital tracks since June 28, 2009, the first sales week following his passing, according to Nielsen SoundScan. To put that in perspective, from the time Nielsen began counting digital tracks in 2004 until the week before Jackson's death, the singer had sold just over 8.1 million digital tracks, a figure that has doubled in just the past two years.

2013: The projected launch for a second, non-touring Cirque show celebrating Jackson. The yet-untitled show is slated to open in the spring of 2013 at a new theater being built at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

$25 million to $50 million: That's how much Jackson's estate takes in on an annual basis thanks to his stake in the half-million-song Sony/ATV catalog, which includes titles by Elvis, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Beyoncé and Bob Dylan.

Michael Jackson's Family Upset With James Durbin Over 'American Idol' Pepsi Quip

'We were shocked to see this,' read the Jacksons' message; Durbin tweeted an apology on Thursday.
By Gil Kaufman

Some people might argue that it's patently unfair to take rank amateurs, put them on the biggest show on TV and then expose them to potential worldwide ridicule every week. Because it's one thing to tune in to "American Idol" from your living room or play shows at the local wings joint, it's another thing entirely when you get up on that stage and open your mouth with tens of millions watching and listening.

James Durbin learned this lesson the hard way this week when he made what he thought was an innocent crack about not setting himself on fire during his pyro-tastic cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" on Wednesday night.

Asked by host Ryan Seacrest if he was worried about dancing around among the flames shooting up from the piano onstage, Durbin joked, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.' "

The seemingly innocent crack was a reference to the 1984 on-set accident in which late pop icon Michael Jackson was badly burned during the shooting of a Pepsi commercial by some wayward pyro effects. The serious burns he suffered in the incident allegedly led to his longtime addiction to pain medication and prescription drugs.

The Jackson family was not amused by the quip and sent a statement to TMZ on Thursday.

"We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death," read the statement. Family patriarch Joseph Jackson also was reportedly miffed that "Idol" producers did not cut the comment from the West Coast feed of the show.

Durbin defended his slip-up in a tweet, which has since been scrubbed from the singer's official "Idol" Twitter feed, that explained, "For anyone talkin ... I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it." He later added, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."

It's worth noting that Pepsi's bitter rival, Coca-Cola, is the main "Idol" sponsor, a fact that Seacrest reminded Durbin of in an awkward moment after the comment on the show.

What did you think of James Durbin's "Pepsi" quip? Tell us in the comments.

Audrina Patridge, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert Share Prom Memories

'Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,' Ke$ha tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories.

"I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good."

Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m."

"Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?"

While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]."

Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life."

"My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' "

Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night."

Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy."

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.

Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."

It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.

"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."

He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."

Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Nirvana's Big Break, With A Smashing Pumpkins Assist

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, band's close friend — and former MTV staffer — Amy Finnerty recalls their rise to fame.

When Amy Finnerty first met Nirvana, she had just come to MTV to work in the Music and Programming department. Of course, she didn't let them know that fact. She was just blown away to finally meet the guys who had made her favorite album (at least at that point): Bleach.

Over the next four years, Finnerty would not only become close friends with the band, but intrinsically linked to them too. Since she was just a few years younger than the guys (not to mention a huge fan), she was one of the first people within the company to champion them — and was almost singlehandedly responsible for getting their "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the channel. And because of all that — and the 20th anniversary of the epochal Nevermind album — MTV News sat down with Finnerty to get the inside story on the days before Nirvana became a household name and the wild (and amazing) times that followed after.

And it all started with that first meeting, backstage in New York.

"The first night I met Nirvana, I was backstage at, I think it was a Waterboys show, and the band was in New York, touring on the Bleach album, and they were being courted by a bunch of record labels, Geffen being one of them," she said. "So I'm standing around backstage, and I see Kurt Cobain leaning up against the wall, and, uh, 'Oh my God, that's Kurt from Nirvana.' And, at that point, they weren't Nirvana — I mean, they were to me, but not everybody on the planet knew who they were — but, I was terrified. I was scared to go up and introduce myself, but I did. And he said, 'How do you even know who I am?' And I said 'You're in Nirvana! I'm going to see your band at the Pyramid in a few days! You're a great, great band!'

"And he was pretty surprised, so we got to chatting and he said to me, 'Who are you? What are you doing here?' and I said, 'Oh, well, I work at MTV, whatever,' and so he screams down the hall, 'Krist, this girl works at MTV.' And it was on from that second," she laughed. "They started teasing me, making fun of me, Krist was throwing beer around, we were shaking up our beer bottles and squirting each other with beer and stuff, so, it immediately became this joke, because I really wasn't trying to tell them what I did [at MTV]. For the longest time, they referred to me as 'V.P. of Post-It Notes,' because they didn't know that I worked in Music Programming, because they would've teased me about it."

Riki Rachtman recalls Nirvana's cross-dressing appearance on "Headbangers Ball."

Of course, in the months that followed, the hype around the band (and their then-forthcoming album Nevermind) began to swirl, and once Finnerty heard what they guys had been working on with producer Butch Vig, she knew big things were on the horizon.

"The first time I listened to the record, it was like, when you're on vacation and you see something really beautiful that you've never seen before and you open your eyes up super-wide, because you want to get the memory ingrained into your brain, and that's the way I felt," she said. "I was trying to remember every single note."

Still, convincing the folks at MTV to take a chance on the band proved a lot tougher than she'd imagined. After all, she was young, and the band was virtually unknown outside of a few hip enclaves around the country. But that all changed the second she saw the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video — which, in a bit of alt-rock kismet, arrived in her office at the exact moment another soon-to-be-huge band did too.

"The Smashing Pumpkins were staying at my house, and I said, 'You guys, come by MTV, give me the keys to the apartment, and then I'll bring you around the halls and introduce you to some people.' ... And so the Pumpkins came in 10 minutes after I had gotten my hands on that music video, and so we went into my office to watch it, and everyone thought it was incredible," Finnerty said. "So I took the video and I walked around the halls at MTV and simultaneously introduced a bunch of people to the Smashing Pumpkins, and then we'd watch the video ... and then we'd go to a producer's office and I'd say, 'These are the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Gish record that just came out is so incredible, and they're going to send us a video. Oh, and by the way, we've got this Nirvana video; you have to check it out.' "

Nirvana's rise to fame, in their own words.

After Finnerty showed a few folks within the building "Smells Like Teen Spirit," she brought it to MTV's music meeting, where the fates of new videos were decided. After some healthy back-and-forth, it was determined that "Spirit" would be given a world premiere during MTV's "120 Minutes" (with rotation on the channel to begin the following week). It was a sink-or-swim moment for the band and as you're probably aware, things worked out pretty well.

"That was unprecedented; MTV, as far as I know, had never world-premiered a video for a band that they had no history with," Finnerty explained. "And then ... some of the crew and a lot of the people that were on the road with the band came over to my house that Sunday night, and we all sat up waiting for this world premiere, and, like, I took pictures of it. It was a big moment!"

It was just the first of many for the band and their friend. But for all the highlights, perhaps none illustrates Nirvana's scruffy charm quite like a story Finnerty told us about a party she threw for the band at her New York City apartment. Twenty years later, it's one she's still amazed by — sort of like the band she helped become huge ("in some small way," she cautioned) just by believing.

"So Nirvana played in New York, and I had decided to have a party at my apartment afterwards ... and the band came, and I think [the Pixies'] Kim Deal was there, and then there were just a host of other people that I had no idea who they were. And I leaned over to Kurt and I was like, 'Are these your friends? Do you know any of these people?' And he was like, 'I don't know any of these people ... do you want me to get them to leave?' " she recalled. "So he said, 'I'm going to walk out, I'm going to go downstairs and hide under the stairs, and everyone's going to leave. Watch.' And so he walked out, and, you know, you could see everyone trying to act casual, but they all saw him leave, and then it was like a mass exodus; within 10 minutes my apartment was cleared.

"And then he came back up and got me and told me that we were going to go listen to the best jukebox in town, and I thought I was going to have this unbelievable night of listening to some hidden punk rock on some cool jukebox in New York, right?" she continued. "But instead he took me to the 119 Bar, which, at the time, had a jukebox that only played disco music. And so we danced to Donna Summer, and then we went home. It was a pretty amazing night."

Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal the Nevermind You Never Knew, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.

Britney Spears Drops Official 'Till The World Ends' Remix

New track with Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha follows leaked version, plus Brit tweets single's cover art.
By Jocelyn Vena

Just days after it was leaked on Friday, Britney Spears and her femme fatales, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha, dropped their official remix of "Till the World Ends."

The new version of the song was produced by Dr. Luke and Dream Machine. Brit half-whispers " 'Till the World Ends' remix" before the beat kicks in and Nicki hits her verse hard. She spits fierce lines like, "Sniff, sniff, cries/ I done slayed your whole entire f---ing life."

Then Britney's sex-kitten vocals kick in for the song's first verse. "That's Britney, bitch! I'm Nicki Minaj and that's Ke$ha," the Queens MC declares before K sings the chorus. The beat is harder, the loops are sassier and the song is grimier than the original version, which was the second single from Femme Fatale. The newly added dubstep portion takes the one from "Hold It Against Me" to a new level by adding in bass-heavy synths.

Ke$ha, of course, wrote the track for Britney, and the ladies certainly don't seem to mind sharing the spotlight with each other. The official track isn't much different than the version that leaked over the weekend, though Spears did have something brand-new to share with her fans just as the song dropped on iTunes and streamed on her website.

Spears tweeted the artwork for the single, which features the original press photo of Spears along with separate photos of Nicki on the left and Ke$ha on the right. Spears wrote, "@NickiMinaj @Keshasuxx Too much fierceness for one cover! Thanks for lending your voices girls... #TTWEREMIX — Brit"

Spears and Minaj have been hanging out a lot in the lead-up to their summer tour. They hung out at the Factory nightclub on Friday night after Minaj's show in Los Angeles. Spears later wrote, "Early rehearsal after a late night with my girl @NickiMinaj. Can't WAIT to get out on the road with you."

Lady Gaga Goes Topless In Latest 'You And I' Fashion Film

Singer appears as the 'Bride' in the clip, which dropped late Tuesday.

Two down, four more to go. On Tuesday night, Lady Gaga tweeted out her latest "Yoü and I" fashion film. After portraying "Nymph" in the first one, Gaga portrays the black-clad Bride in the latest installment, which she tweeted out to her Little Monsters.

The Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin-directed clip features Gaga wearing her outfit from the opening scenes of the proper "Yoü and I" video in which she stands at the cornfield crossroads.

During the two-minute, 28-second clip, Gaga dances around in her black chiffon outfit, slowly stripping away her blond wig and couture. By the end, she's topless, with her hands covering her breasts. Some of Gaga's monsters and pals make an appearance in the video as well, including blink-and-miss-it appearances from her video co-star "Vampire Diaries" actor Taylor Kinney and her stylist Nicola Formichetti.

The black-and-white clip also has funny, kitschy moments showing Gaga smiling, laughing and making funny faces for the camera. The videos were shot while Mother Monster and her entire Haus were in Nebraska earlier this summer working on the Laurieann Gibson-directed clip.

Each of the six films will focus on one of Gaga's characters in the original video, which includes her mermaid incarnation, Yuyi and her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. "We built a studio in a pigsty and worked for three days with her constantly coming off set to us and filming with us and taking pictures," Inez told MTV News. "What's incredible in there is that this is Gaga as herself, in the character that she is, related to the 'Yoü and I' video, and it's purely her."

Bruno Mars' 'Breaking Dawn' Song Will Be 'Dark'

'I'm Team Bella all day,' the 'It Will Rain' singer reveals in new Billboard interview.
By Jocelyn Vena

Bruno Mars is set to make it rain on the "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" soundtrack. Mars' track, "It Will Rain," is set to drop on Tuesday, one day after the full track list for the soundtrack hits the streets.

"After seeing the movie, I thought that it would be a perfect fit," Mars told Billboard about the lead single off the soundtrack, which is out on November 8 (just 10 days before the movie hits theaters). "The 'Twilight' movies for me [are] a love story. But it's a dark love story," he added. "And I think the best way to describe the song is: It's the darker side of love. I think that pretty much sums it up."

And while the singer didn't reveal any plot details in the chat, he did weigh in on the biggest conundrum of our time: Is he Team Edward or Team Jacob? "Do I wear a Team Jacob shirt or a Team Edward shirt?" Mars teased. You know what? I'm Team Bella all day."

So how did the song come together? The VMA-nominated singer said it "started off with me and the guitar, and I just had this melody in my head and basically laid it down after I saw the film." Mars also said he saw "most of the movie" so he "could catch the vibe and feel where they were going with it."

But since he didn't see a final cut, he has no idea where his song will get placed. "As long as it's not after the credits," Mars joked. "I hope it's in a good [scene]!"

Mars and the Smeezingtons had been working on the track before Bruno was asked to contribute to the soundtrack. In fact, earlier this summer, Mars teased MTV News that he had a song he was super excited to share with his Hooligans, though it's unclear if "It Will Rain" is the same song. "I'm definitely thinking about what's next," he said in August. "I've got a song that I just wrote that I'm extremely proud of and I worked really hard on, and it's gonna come out soon."

Check out everything we've got on "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1."

'Glee' Season Finale Exclusive: Listen To 'Yeah!' Here

An a cappella girl group covers Usher's hit for Nationals in next week's episode.
By Aly Semigran

During this week's episode of "Glee", the gang from New Directions took a big risk when they decided they would compete in Nationals by singing their own original songs. Well, the stakes just got a little higher.

MTV News has an exclusive first listen to one of the rival groups who will go up against the McKinley High glee club in New York City during next Tuesday's (May 24) big season two finale. In the upcoming episode, an all-female a cappella group sings Usher's 2004 club and radio smash "Yeah!," which may have the Nationals judges saying just that.

Singers replace synthesizers for the four-note melody that repeats throughout the song, and lead vocalists RaVaughn Brown and Missi Hale match the high energy that Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris brought to the track.

Granted, a few things have been tweaked in the version for the tween-friendly show, including the length (the original is over four minutes long, while the "Glee" version comes in at three and a half minutes) and the tune's instructions to "Take that and rewind it back ... got the rhythm make ya booty go."

Also, instead of Ludacris' verse, "We want a lady in the street/ And a freak in the bed," one girl sings, "You know you want a kiss on the lips, old red." The line, "Ludacris fill cups like double D's" has also been cut from the song.

But, it's not all PG. At one point in the girls' rendition of the track, they page homage to Lil Jon's crunk hit "Get Low," singing, "From the windows to the walls" and even Mystikal's booty-happy single "Shake Ya Ass," when they urge, "Show me whatcha' workin' with."

At the 2005 Grammy Awards, the power trio of Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Yeah!" But, will the song bring the same sort of fortune to this girl group at Nationals? Or will the glory all belong to New Directions this time? Gleeks will still have to wait a few more days to find out.

The "Glee" season finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Fox, while "Glee": The Music, Volume 6, including the three new original songs "Light Up the World," "Pretending" and "As Long as You're There," will be available on Monday.

What do you think of this a cappella group's version of "Yeah!"? Let us know in the comments section below!

Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj And Ke$ha 'Till The World Ends' Remix Leaks

Reworked tune features an opening verse by Minaj as Ke$ha sings atop Spears' vocals throughout the song.
By James Dinh

Britney Spears isn't the only pop titan dancing until the world ends: Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha have joined forces to add a new spin on an all-female remix of Femme Fatale's second single, "Till the World Ends."

The reworked dance anthem, which leaked online Friday (April 22), appears to have surfaced earlier than expected as noted by a series of countdowns on all three of the stars' websites.

Mixing the dance tune's original sonic swirls with heavier bass, Britney tourmate Minaj starts off the remix by throwing down an aggressive verse, in which she calls out a female hater: "A-A-A-A-A-AYE!/ Chimpanzees is hatin', but I take it all in stride/ Put her in a jungle with bananas on the side/ Told you they'd revive your career, but somebody lied/ I ain't talkin' poultry when I say this chicken's fried."

After Minaj spits a few introductory bars, Spears delivers the song's first verse before an introduction for the all-star trio. "It's Britney, bitch. I'm Nicki Minaj and that's Ke$ha!" the Young Money MC proclaims.

Ke$ha, who originally wrote the track for the pop princess, takes part in singing the club-ready track's chorus. Spears soon takes back control of the song as Ke$ha shadows the singer's lines toward the end of the second verse and bridge. Unlike the original version, the "Till the World Ends" remix also features a stuttering dubstep dance break.

News of a star-studded collaboration was hinted earlier this week when producer Dr. Luke tweeted, "@NICKIMINAJ killed it tonight!!!! thanks!!!"
