Justin Bieber's Birthday Bash: What Could It Look Like?
Party planner Colin Cowie tells MTV News the fete would involve Beyonce, spaghetti and an 'amazing, over-the-top' cake.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P>As <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> heads into his birthday weekend, we're sure the newly legal star has some big plans to celebrate. To get an idea of what a <a href="/news/articles/1680195/justin-bieber-18th-birthday-top-moment.jhtml">Justin Bieber 18th Birthday</a> Mega Bash might look like, we turned to party planner to the stars Colin Cowie, who dished on how he'd plan out the Bieb's big par-tay. </P><P> </P><P>"Since it's his first real big birthday and he really plays to a big world, he deserves a big party," Cowie said. "And I would pull out all the stops." </P><P> </P><P>Everything from the location to the food to the entertainment has to live up to Bieber's celebrity, but also has to still feel intimate. "I'd take a great nightclub and throw a fabulous party in a nightclub, not too big ... invite 200 of his best friends," he explained, suggesting Manhattan hot spot the Double Seven as a possible location. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744679/cp~name%3Dnews%26id%3D1680192%26vid%3D744679%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744679" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>"I think I would use a combination of a DJ to start with, get the crowd going, add a couple live musicians just to build the energy and then have a live band," he said of the entertainment. "And maybe Usher puts together a great musical repertoire, invites someone like Beyoncé, who I know Justin has a huge, big crush on." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to the A-list entertainment, the chow also has to be top-notch. "I wouldn't serve a sit-down dinner, I wouldn't serve a buffet, but have a series of stations showcasing some of his favorite foods," he said. "We know he loves spaghetti, so I'd have a spaghetti bar with six different spaghettis. We know that he loves tacos, maybe do a taco bar with five different margaritas, maybe do virgin ones for those who can and those who can't. Of course, [there would be] an amazing, over-the-top birthday cake." </P><P> </P><P>In the end, though, Cowie notes it's all about making it memorable. "Make sure it's the party of the lifetime with a well-thought-out beginning, middle and end," he said. "And you'll wake up the next morning and say 'Oh my god, that was the best night of my life.' " </P><P> </P><P>While we don't know how he will end up celebrating the big occasion, <a href="/news/articles/1680191/justin-bieber-birthday-fan-questions.jhtml">Bieber did give MTV News</a> a hint. "My birthday, I'm going to hang out with my friends and family," he said. "Have a little get-together; nothing too crazy." </P><P> </P><P>With the guest list still unknown, it seems like there is one unexpected pal who is looking forward to the fete. "Happy Birthday @JustinBieber. Check your mail for something cool I sent to the house," Mike Tyson <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/miketyson">tweeted</a> on Thursday (March 1), teasing a birthday party planned for Friday. "See you tomorrow buddy." </P><P> </P><P><i>How do you think Bieber will be celebrating his 18th birthday? Conrad Murray Not Expected To Serve Full Four Years
Legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi tells MTV News he isn't surprised by sentence but doesn't think it's justified.
By Gil Kaufman
Dr. Conrad Murray sits in court after he was sentenced for the involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Judge Michael E. Pastor sentenced Murray to four years in the Los Angeles County Jail for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson. A restitution hearing has been scheduled for January 23, 2012 to determine the amount of restitution to be paid to the Jackson family.

<P>Though he dodged a potential four-year prison term, former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> physician Conrad Murray was sentenced to an equal amount of time in Los Angeles County Jail on Tuesday (November 29) in the death of the pop singer. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:714975.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> But the same overcrowding problems that spared the cardiologist from doing time in a federal pen might also save him from serving his entire sentence in county as well. Shortly after the <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">sentence was handed down</a> by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, Los Angeles Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore told <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/jackson_family_reacts_conrad_murrays/277336" target="_blank">E! News</a> that Murray would likely end up serving "a little less than two years." Due to overcrowding, most county jail sentences are immediately cut in half, and given the 46 days credit Murray has already been given, he is looking at even less than that. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> Murray's lawyers said afterward that they believed the sentence was unnecessarily long. "Yes, of course [Judge Pastor] was harsh. He gave the stiffest penalty he was entitled to give under the law," Murray's attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, told reporters. "He was openly hostile. ... [Murray has] led 56 years of exemplary life. He was really dreading [sentencing]. I think anybody would dread going into it. He's an honorable man, and he'll get through this. The family is suffering more than Dr. Murray is. ... Dr. Murray is the provider in that family." Pastor had leeway in the sentencing, with options ranging from probation to the full sentence, but in a lengthy ruling from the bench, he said Murray's lack of remorse and negligent behavior called for the highest possible penalty. "He is and remains dangerous ... the request of probation is denied, the court imposes the high term of four years imprisonment in this case," Pastor said during the 90-plus-minute hearing. Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that he wasn't surprised by the sentencing but that he didn't believe it was justified. Cavalluzzi said Pastor had incentive to give the full sentence because of the prominence of Jackson and his family and to create the perception that he is tough on crime. "He gets that perception by sentencing him to the max while not having to surrender the defendant to the full sentence," said Cavalluzzi, who was not involved in the case. "He gets the self-satisfaction of being perceived as being tough on crime and making the Jackson family happy, but I don't think it was a fair sentence." Cavalluzzi said when deciding prison versus probation, judges have to look at someone's criminal history and whether a person is likely to complete the terms of their probation, which he believes Murray would. "I'm not seeing aggravating factors here, and I think it was just a chapter in [Murray's] life and he does not have a history of being a mercenary doctor always after money, but of being a good, responsible doctor who was seduced by the celebrity and money that Jackson offered," he said. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> As to why Pastor gave such a dramatic, lengthy explanation for why he was sentencing Murray to the max, Cavalluzzi said the judge has to have a justification for his actions in the public record. "Because he doesn't have the discretion to give a high prison term, [Pastor] has to justify his sentence in the record and have very specific reasons for it. I don't think there's any way that anyone truly believes that from this day forward Dr. Murray truly represents a threat to society. That's just ludicrous." And while he doesn't agree with the four-year term, Cavalluzzi said the high-profile nature of the case and the glare of the media could have played into the sentence. "It probably gives [<a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">Jackson's family</a>] great comfort to have someone to blame," he said. " 'If not for this awful man, my son, brother, father would be alive.' But it's not fair to do that and it feels like a capitulating judgment in favor of feeding the emotional needs of the family." Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Mother Katherine Jackson told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair." The prosecution, however, was satisfied with the ruling. "We're pleased. That's what we thought was appropriate. The judge obviously agreed with us," deputy district attorney David Walgren said. "It was our position that it was not a simple, one-time mistake; it was a series of mistakes culminating in the abandonment of Michael Jackson when he died ... the judge agreed with that sentiment. A brother and a son and a family member was killed, and whatever the sentence may be, the family of the victim deserves justice. And we did everything to bring them that justice." As for how much time Murray will spend locked up, Cavalluzzi said it is likely to be less than two years and, frankly, he predicted, the doctor could be out even sooner than that. "He might be eligible for house arrest very quickly," he said.</p>

'The Lorax' Sweeps Box Office With $70.7M Debut
It marks the biggest debut of 2012 so far and the sixth-largest opening for an animated film.
By Ryan J. Downey

Along with its green environmental message, "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" saw a different kind of green with an estimated $70.7 million debut. Adapted from the 1971 Dr. Seuss classic, the 3-D animated flick had the biggest opening of 2012 so far.
"Project X," the other widely released new movie, was #2 with $20.1 million. The overall box office was up 27 percent from same weekend last year.
"The Lorax" was the first animated flick to hit theaters this year that wasn't a re-release like "Beauty and the Beast" in 3-D or the American version of Japan's "The Secret World of Arrietty," and its performance far exceeded industry expectations. "The Lorax" enjoyed the third-highest opening for a movie released in March (behind "Alice in Wonderland" and "300") as well as the sixth-biggest opening for an animated feature. Its opening leapfrogged the $45 million opening of the last Dr. Seuss adaptation to hit theaters, 2008's "Horton Hears a Who!" and overtook the previous record holder, Jim Carrey's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." "The Lorax" features the voice talents of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Ed Helms and Danny DeVito (in the title role).
"The Lorax" was produced by Universal Pictures' Illumination Entertainment, which was responsible for "Despicable Me" as well, for a reported $70 million. 3-D screenings accounted for about 52 percent of ticket sales, while IMAX screenings comprised roughly 8 percent. At press time, the film had a (just barely) "rotten" 57 percent Tomatometer score on "Rotten Tomatoes," which averages reviews from film critics, but audiences who saw "The Lorax" assigned it an average CinemaScore of "A."
"Project X" is the third found-footage-style movie this year, but the subject matter couldn't be more different from "The Devil Inside" and "Chronicle." A comedy about teenagers throwing a huge party, "Project X" was directed by newcomer Nima Nourizadeh and produced by Todd Phillips, the writer/director behind "The Hangover, "The Hangover Part II," "Old School" and "Road Trip." Way back in 2003, during a set visit to "Starsky and Hutch," Phillips told MTV News, "We are currently working on something called 'Project X,' which may or may not be 'Old School 2,' " which would have reunited Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn told. "Todd has a very original concept for it," Vauhgn told MTV News. "Nothing like what you would expect."
Eventually "Project X" evolved into something else entirely. Made for just $12 million, its debut is a respectable start for Warner Bros. Critics have not been kind, however. The Los Angeles Times' Robert Abele wrote, " 'Project X' bears a cravenly piggish attitude toward rewarding socially unacceptable behavior that feels unseemly rather than exciting, so-what rather than so-funny and obvious instead of new."
Last weekend's #1 movie, "Act of Valor," retreated 44 percent to $13.7 million, coming in at #3 and bringing its total to $45.2 million. "Safe House" was #4 with $7.2 million. It joined a small handful of Denzel Washington movies in the $100 million club about $8 million ago. "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds" rounded out the top five with $7 million for a 10-day total of $25.7 million.
Oscars darling "The Artist" enjoyed its biggest single weekend since it was released in theaters in November, bumping to 1,756 locations and earning another $3.9 million. The Best Picture winner has made $37.1 million domestically.

'Project X': The Reviews Are In!
Critics call the found-footage teen movie immature, unfunny and even dangerous.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Photo: Beth Dubber/ Warner Bros.
"Project X" is the new found-footage movie that claims to show the most out-of-control party ever. Well, it seems like the party might be over based on the reviews the film has earned.
Critics have skewered "Project X," calling it immature, unfunny and even dangerous. For some, that might sound like a ringing endorsement of the party, but when it comes to throwing a movie together, "Project X" is much less successful.
Here is our roundup of "Project X" reviews.
The Story
"In suburban Pasadena, three exceedingly ordinary high school dudes stage a birthday bash for one of them, even though they're hardly the sort of guys that you'd expect to attract a hot crowd. Thomas (Thomas Mann), the one turning 17, whose parents are going away for the weekend, is the dutiful son who has promised — oh, has he promised! — not to mess up their home." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
The Laughs
"It's billed as a comedy, but there's not a laugh to be had during the frenetic mayhem. There is also no plot beyond debauchery, nor characters beyond cardboard cutouts. Basically, it's a setting, and a familiar one: a suburban home teeming with drunken, druggie, hedonistic, irresponsible high-schoolers." — Claudia Puig, USA Today
The POV
"Aesthetically, the film sets the teeth grinding and the eyes aching. Presenting the spectacle from the p.o.v. of a home video camera documenting the event for posterity, first-time director Nima Nourizadeh and cinematographer Ken Seng swing the camera around with all the stability of a rowboat in a storm and unsurprisingly induce a strong facsimile of seasickness. The images tend to be dark and random, the music incessant." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter
The Parents in the Audience
"But only about an hour in, 'Project X' grows repetitive and starts running out of steam, and you begin to wonder what could possibly occur over the remaining 30 minutes or so. And not to get all mom-ish, but it does send a disturbing message to teens under the guise of 'edgy' entertainment. If you provide a setting and the means for strangers to get hammered, it will make you cool. If you are a young woman who wants approval, you must get naked and give up the goods." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press
The Final Word
"The only people likely to buy into the oh-so-shocking exploits of the teen comedy 'Project X' are those who can't get invited to their own high school parties. Though the central blowout is as epic as advertised, so is the movie's self-congratulatory obnoxiousness." — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

Will Justin Bieber's Big-Screen Dreams Come True?
On his 18th birthday, we take a look at the superstar's upcoming acting gigs.

<P>By this point, it's no secret that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> has his sights set on the silver screen. Ever since his meteoric rise to stardom and his success with the concert film <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/461165/moviemain.jhtml">"Never Say Never,"</a> talk has circulated about his first dramatic film projects. <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744688/cp~id%3D1680192%26vid%3D744688%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744688%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> Now, on his 18th birthday, let's take a closer look at Bieber's big-screen potential! We got an early look at his acting chops on an <a href="/news/articles/1648613/justin-biebers-csi-cameo-shows-off-dark-side.jhtml">episode of "CSI,"</a> in which he played troubled teen Jason McCann and was famously blown away in a hail of gunfire. The cameo indicated his purported desire to take on darker roles, along the lines of those played by Mark Wahlberg. The most concrete movie project on the horizon for <a href="/news/articles/1665220/justin-bieber-mark-wahlberg-movie.jhtml">Bieber actually involves Wahlberg</a>. The two have been developing a basketball movie, in the vein of "The Color of Money." Wahlberg will play a weathered baller who takes a younger player (Bieber) under his wing. <a href="/news/articles/1676492/mark-wahlberg-justin-bieber-basketball-movie.jhtml">MTV News spoke with Wahlberg about the project</a>, and he said his interest in working with the pop star comes from his intuition about Bieber's acting ability. "I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it," Wahlberg said. "Then you actually have a conversation with him, and it's there." The basketball project is currently in development at Paramount. Another Wahlberg-related project with Bieber's name attached is a rumored <a href="/news/articles/1678210/justin-bieber-fear-remake-reese-witherspoon.jhtml">remake of the 1996 film "Fear."</a> MovieWeb reported back in January that Bieber is supposedly "obsessed" with the movie and hopes to land the psychotic role to mirror Wahlberg's career path. There hasn't been an update on the remake's progress since. <b>Happy 18th birthday, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>! 'X Factor' Michael Jackson Night Has Singers On Edge
Meanwhile, Paula Abdul has been absent from the set since her final group was eliminated last week.

<P><i>MTV News' own Jim Cantiello is exclusively covering "The X Factor" rehearsals. Read on for his fly-on-the-wall backstage report!</i> <b>LOS ANGELES</b> — "The X Factor" top seven are back on the lot after their first (and only) mini-vacation of the season. And as the Thanksgiving tryptophan wears off, the anxiety of another double elimination is setting in. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:714741" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Adding to the stress? "The X Factor" is tackling the songs of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> on Wednesday night (November 30), on the 29th anniversary of <i>Thriller</i>'s release, no less. One of the contestants is so stressed over the theme he's emerged as a total perfectionist. During Monday's rehearsals, he had already nixed multiple arrangements the show had provided him. "This is the most unprepared I've felt on a Monday," he said to his mentor as they rushed out of Stage 36. There was a camera crew chasing them to capture the drama — as well as the ensuing late-night emergency meeting with the vocal coaches — so don't be surprised if some of this intense footage ends up in your living room. (This afternoon's dress rehearsal went swimmingly, for the record.) Meanwhile, one contestant had a full-on battle with his/her mentor over a chair. The mentor said, "Sit and sing." The contestant said, "Again?! How about I do something on my feet for Michael Jackson week?" Another mentor came to the defense of the contestant. In the end, the contestant is sitting after all. Don't worry, contestant. The eerie arrangement of an MJ classic is what folks are going to be buzzing about. No one will care if you sit or stand. In the control room, I spied one of the bigwigs utter the word "brilliant!" after the contestant's dress rehearsal. Another hot topic: wardrobe! When paying homage to one of the biggest music icons ever, it's tempting for the stylists to include clothing nods to Michael's various looks. But several singers are worried they'll look too much like Jackson impersonators, which has caused many a headache in the wardrobe trailer. But stylist June Ambrose is still able to keep things light in the midst of the drama. While waiting around for a contestant's last-minute fitting, she started an impromptu MJ dance party on the lot. Crotch grabs and "woo" included! Lastly, Paula Abdul's sunny energy has been noticeably absent on the CBS lot now that all her groups have been eliminated. She went from being the most hands-on mentor to an on-set ghost. "The X Factor" family can't wait to welcome her back for her first live show as strictly a judge. What do you think she's been doing with her newfound free time? <b>You can catch Jim on the "X Factor Pepsi Pre-Show," streaming at 7 p.m. ET tonight on <a href="http://www.thexfactorusa.com/" target="_blank">TheXFactorUSA.com</a>!</b></p>

With a Little Luck: A Novel
My good friend Caprice Crane's new book, With a Little Luck, is out today. Yay, Caprice!
It's gotten great reviews:
"Crane is one of the funniest writers of popular fiction around. The dialog (inner and outer) is laugh-out-loud, snort-inducing hilarious . . . Readers will want to cross their fingers and spit while throwing salt over their shoulders if it helps Berry reach her dreams. Highly recommended."
—Library Journal
"Fans of Stacy Ballis and Cara Lockwood will appreciate Crane's effortlessly funny style, which is often attempted in popular fiction but is rarely this well executed...Lighthearted and charmingly honest."
—Booklist
"[A] satisfying romantic comedy...[with] real character growth."
—Kirkus Reviews
And even better blurbs:
"Romantic, poignant and funny—this book is a lucky find for lit fans. Caprice Crane is a nimble and gifted storyteller."

"A hilarious romp that oozes charm and giddy fun. Caprice Crane is a true talent."

—Jancee Dunn, author of Don’t You Forget About Me and Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?
"Absolutely charming and hilarious."
—Missy Peregrym, star of the movie Stick It and ABC's Rookie Blue
"With a Little Luck scores in humor, head, and heart. In other words, it’s a perfect trifecta."

Raymond</i>. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717257" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise." Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.' "So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added. Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret." Usher said he was drawn to the <a href="/news/articles/1674782/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">Guetta hit</a> because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is." <div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:713197/cp~vid%3D713197%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A713197" width="420" height="236" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></div></div></p>

No hay más Led Zeppelin
By
¿Y a ti? ¿Qué te parece todo esto?</p>

Usher And David Guetta 'Proud' Of 'Without You'
'When you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is,' Usher tells MTV News.

<P>When <a href="/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> and <a href="/music/artist/guetta_david/artist.jhtml">David Guetta</a> hooked up for the French DJ's latest album, <i>Nothing but the Beat,</i> the two superstars created a chart-topping smash, <a href="/news/articles/1670301/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">"Without You,"</a> that combines Guetta's ear for house beats and Usher's ability to convey a range of emotions with his voice. It's a song that has really stuck with fans of all genres of music. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:713197" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The track — a swirling pop ode to not giving up on love in the face of adversity — struck Usher with its emotional core. "David Guetta is an amazing artist," he told MTV News last week at a <a href="/news/articles/1674705/justin-bieber-usher-advice.jhtml">Pencils of Promise charity event</a>. "We talked for many years about working together, and we found a record that was incredible." Usher said it was a song that resonated with him personally. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:688619" width="240" height="211"></div><p> When MTV News talked to Guetta on the <a href="/news/articles/1674728/ama-taylor-swift-nicki-minaj-katy-perry.jhtml">American Music Awards</a> red carpet Sunday, he said "Without You" is a standout track on the album. The LP dropped earlier this year and also includes <a href="/news/articles/1674756/american-music-awards-nicki-minaj-david-guetta.jhtml">Nicki Minaj, who performed with Guetta at the AMAs</a>. "It's one of my favorite songs," he said. "It's just, I'm a DJ, so I want to make people dance always, but I also want to give emotions. When it comes to that, 'Without You' is probably one of the most emotional songs that I've done, and yes, I'm very proud of that record." <i>What do you think about "Without You"? Adam Lambert Early Recordings To Be Released
Lawsuit clears way for release of music recorded before Lambert's 'American Idol' run.

You already knew Adam Lambert was going to release his second major-label album, Trespassing next month. But did you know that it is one of two CDs the former "American Idol" runner-up will be dropping this year?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second release, Beg For Mercy, is not necessarily one that Lambert wants out in the world, but it will see the light of day thanks to the settling of a lawsuit.
Colwel Platinum Entertainment had sued Lambert over claims that the singer had interfered with its attempts to release Mercy, which was recorded before Lambert rose to stardom as the runner-up in the eighth season of "Idol." The two sides reportedly came to terms with each other and the lawsuit was dismissed less than four months after Colwel accused the singer of allegedly making a false claim under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and sending a takedown notice to Amazon.com after Colwel had the album on the site.
The company claimed that it owned a 50 percent share of the publishing in the recordings and that according to its contract with Lambert it had the right to promote and sell his music. Now, Colwel has dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice and gotten assurance from Lambert that he won't stand in the way of Mercy's release.
Both sides also made it clear that Lambert's deal with Colwel never, as rumored, made him ineligible for "Idol," though Colwel's original complaint in the case mentioned that it might have.
"The Colwel Platinum Entertainment lawsuit against Adam Lambert has been resolved," read a statement from the company to the Reporter. "Adam has withdrawn any objections to the release of 'Beg For Mercy' and he has approved the use of his songs and performances in these pre-'Idol' recordings which are interpretations of his artistic vision at the time. Neither Colwel Platinum Entertainment, Inc. nor Malcolm Welsford ever stated that Adam was not eligible to participate in American Idol when he did so and regret that the lawsuit's allegations were misinterpreted."
At press time, Lambert, who will be performing several shows this summer as the lead singer of iconic rock band Queen, had not commented publicly on the matter. The first single from Trespassing, "Better Than I Know Myself," was released in December.
